Indoor Seed Starting: How to Grow Like a Pro Before the Season Begins
In Saudi Arabia, starting seeds indoors gives you a head start on the growing season — especially for vegetables and herbs that take longer to mature or struggle in direct outdoor sowing. With the right setup, you can nurture healthy seedlings before transplanting them into your garden when the weather is just right.
Why Start Indoors?
Some plants, like tomatoes, peppers, and basil, require a longer growing window than what’s available outdoors in most parts of Saudi Arabia. Starting seeds indoors:
- Expands your choice of varieties
- Leads to earlier harvests and higher yield
- Protects fragile seedlings from harsh heat or sandstorms early in the season
1. Choose a Clean, Light Medium
Forget garden soil — it’s too dense. Use a sterile seed starting mix or coconut coir to give your seeds a light, breathable, moisture-holding base. Botanvia recommends organic coir bricks or fine composted material for sustainable, clean growth.
2. Use the Right Container
Seed trays or fiber pots work best. They’re compact, biodegradable, and make transplanting easier. Just make sure whatever container you use has drainage holes to prevent soggy roots.
3. Provide Gentle Warmth
Seeds like it warm — around 24–28°C (75–82°F). A heat mat speeds up germination and keeps moisture even. Place your trays near a sunny window or under LED grow lights after sprouting.
4. Light Is Everything
Once seeds germinate, they need strong light. Use a south-facing window or grow lights placed 10cm above the plants. Without enough light, seedlings get tall, thin, and weak — called “leggy” growth. Keep lights on for 14–16 hours daily for best results.
5. Water Correctly
Start with pre-moistened mix. After planting, keep soil evenly moist — not soaked. Cover trays with a plastic dome or wrap to trap humidity until seeds sprout. After that, uncover and water from the base using a tray.
6. Watch Daily
Monitor your seedlings daily. Adjust lights as they grow, check for dry spots, and rotate trays if sunlight is one-sided. Seedlings grow fast, and regular observation makes a huge difference.
7. Harden Off Before Moving Outdoors
Before transplanting, expose your plants gradually to the outdoor environment over 7–10 days. Start with 2–3 hours in a shaded spot, slowly increasing sun exposure. This step prevents transplant shock.
Botanvia Bonus Tip: Don’t Forget to Label
As seedlings grow, it’s easy to forget which variety is which. Use small labels in each cell or tray row. You’ll thank yourself later!
